The Western Station is one of four ‘iconic stations’ among the 85 stations of the Riyadh Metro project. Iconic stations are functionally distinguished by their multi-modal connections between light rail, bus lines, parking facilities and retail spaces. As well as station facilities, the station includes a destination food market, retail units, gardens and parks. Designed by architects Omrania, the concept is a modern interpretation of desert sand dunes. The external envelope of the smooth, wavelike forms, is a glass fibre reinforced concrete (GFRC) cladding system, framing entrances of large-scale glass walls, providing natural light and views of the transit facilities and market halls. The station is rated LEED Silver for new construction. During the design stages, Newtecnic provided façade engineering design, including the external GFRC cladding system and the glass walls. During the construction stage, in collaboration with the façade contractor, Newtecnic provided shop drawings, calculations and fabrication packages.
